Individual therapy sessions last 50 minutes and are typically held at the same time each week.
All children are offered a series of 12 therapy sessions, however children grow at their own pace and will be unique in how they engage with the process and the number of sessions they require.
The therapist meets with the parent(s)/guardian(s) initially without the child present. This provides an opportunity for the therapist to gain an understanding of the challenges and issues being experienced by the child and family.
During the first therapy session parent(s)/guardian(s) are invited into the therapy room with the child for the first 5-10 minutes. This will be the child’s first introduction to the therapist, who will read a Touchstone Story. This is a developmentally sensitive story of the child’s life including a gentle explanation of the reasons they are coming to therapy.
It typically takes 6-8 sessions for the child to build rapport with the therapist and to adapt to the therapy room. The therapist meets with parent(s)/guardian(s) after six sessions which is an opportunity to discuss how your child is doing while respecting their right to confidentiality.
For the duration of therapy a review meeting will be offered to parent(s)/guardian(s) after every six sessions.
Ending of therapy is carefully planned. It is in the child’s best interests to have a series of closing sessions rather than a sudden ending. Children are welcome to return to therapy at a future time if needed.
All materials are provided and adapted to suit the ability and developmental age of the child.
